CONSERVATION/ACTIVISM The Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club is actively involved in preservation of parklands, promotion of good environmental policy, and work for a cleaner environment here, in our region. Join us in our progress toward restoration of our rivers, a sensible transportation policy for the greater metropolitan Washington area, improved recycling and waste reduction practices, cleaner air, and healthier parkland. This web site and our quarterly newsletter Capital Sierran provide a wealth of information on some of our recent activities. As you read, don't hesitate to contact the leaders listed for issues that interest you. Or, if you have general conservation questions or don't know who to call, contact Bob Morris , (202) 548-8240. Click here for our specific requests for volunteers. We WANT to hear from you! We deeply appreciate your support and participation. The Sierra Club works because people like you get involved! Air Quality: cleaning up DC's smoggy air and the DC regional clean air plan Clean Energy: The Washington, D.C. Sierra Club Chapter has taken a leading role in a Clean Energy Campaign for the Washington, D.C. area. It has partnered with several organizations including the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) and Friends of the Earth (FOE) to build a coalition of groups to support a Clean Energy Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) bill. The RPS works by requiring all electricity providers to include a minimum percent of clean, renewable electricity in the electric power supply portfolio they offer to their customers; it would come from renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. By passing such legislation, Washington, D.C. would join the thirteen states that have similar laws concerning clean energy, including nearby New Jersey, Pennsylvania and oil giant Texas. Water Quality and Rivers: Cleaning up our Anacostia River Transportation and Land Use: improving and expanding Metrorail and Metrobus in the District, improving DC's bicycle and pedestrian facilities, encouraging transit-oriented development (placing jobs and housing near transit) Parks and Open Space: preservation of DC parklands Recycling: improved recycling in DC and waste reduction practices Restore the Core Campaign: Principles for a livable city Environmental Justice: The Sierra Club's Environmental Justice program supports local communities to fight for a clean and healthy environment for low-income neighborhoods and others whose neighborhoods have been targeted by polluting industries. Trees For DC: Protecting the District's tree canopy means money in the pocket of our businesses, taxpayers, and property owners, and increases our quality of life by cooling our streets, adding beauty, reducing ambient noise levels, trapping chemical and particulate air pollution, and providing homes for songbirds and other wildlife EPEC:The Sierra Club's extensive Environmental Public Education Campaign (EPEC) About Us | Take Action | Political Issues | Conservation/Activism |
