The Washington, D.C. Sierra Club Chapter has taken a leading role in a Clean
Energy Campaign for the Washington, D.C. area. It has partnered with several
organizations including the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) and Friends
of the Earth (FOE) to build a coalition of groups to support a Clean Energy
Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) bill. The RPS works by requiring all electricity
providers to include a minimum percent of clean, renewable electricity in the
electric power supply portfolio they offer to their customers; it would come
from renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. By passing
such legislation, Washington, D.C. would join the thirteen states that have
similar laws concerning clean energy, including nearby New Jersey, Pennsylvania
and oil giant Texas.
