THE SIERRA CLUB... We're making a difference in DC!

Why the Sierra Club?
People join the Sierra Club for many reasons. As the largest grass roots environmental organization, the Sierra Club represents millions of people who are concerned about protecting and preserving our natural environment and resources. The Sierra Club also provides many opportunities through hikes, backpacks, etc., for people to enjoy our natural heritage. The Sierra Club Washington, DC Chapter brings the Sierra Club mission close to home, offering you many ways to get involved, meet new people who share your concern for the environment, or just enjoy the outdoors. Here are just a few:

Programs
The Sierra Club Washington, DC Chapter sponsors numerous programs throughout the year for education, for recreation, and for just plain fun. Check out the Calendar on this website, look at the most recent newsletter, or contact a Chapter leader for specific dates and times of upcoming events such as:

  • General Membership Programs

  • Executive Committee Meetings

  • Special Events (Earth Day, Trail Maintenance, Annual Dinner, Park Cleanups, etc.)

Conservation
The Sierra Club Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club is actively involved in preservation of parklands, promotion of good environmental policy, and work for a cleaner environment here, in our region. Join us in our progress toward restoration of our rivers, a sensible transportation policy for the greater metropolitan Washington area, improved recycling and waste reduction practices, cleaner air, and healthier parkland. Check out Conservation on this website for more information.

Publications
One of the benefits of your membership in the Sierra Club is the national magazine, Sierran. You will also receive Sierra Club Washington, DC Chapter mailings and the newsletter. Each issue will keep you informed of local Sierra Club events, local environmental issues, and much more. Check out the Capital Sierran newsletter on this website.

Members also receive discounts on Sierra Club calendars, books, and other merchandise purchased through the Chapter. Besides saving you money, these sales directly benefit the Sierra Club.

Political Issues
You may know that the Sierra Club actively lobbies congress to advance sound environmental policies throughout the country. The Sierra Club Washington, DC Chapter is also hard at work here in the region to assure environmental responsibility where it affects you most — right in your neighborhood. You can be part of the process.

Outings
And of course, the Sierra Club means outings! Hiking, backpacking, trail maintenance, and other outdoor adventures are open to people of all abilities. For more information, check out Outings on this web site.

The Sierra Club Washington, DC Chapter also sponsors Inner-City Outings to provide youth of the District of Columbia the opportunity to experience outdoor adventures in natural settings. For more information, check out Inner-City Outings on this web site.

How to Join
If you are a resident of the District of Columbia, your membership in the national organization automatically makes you a member of the DC Chapter as well. Residents of other jurisdictions may request their membership be in the DC Chapter by specifically stating so in their application to the national organization.
